SMCS Curriculum Handbook

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Charleston provide meaningful, engaging learning experiences and faith formation through relevant and rigorous curriculum. All curriculum developed in the Diocese is based on competitive standards, as well as current curricular research, the needs of our students, and draws on the expertise of our teachers and administrators. These standards serve as expectations for all students in the Diocese of Charleston, so they are prepared for college, career, and life. Through the curriculum development process, the following National Catholic Standards and Benchmarks for Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) are used to ensure our curriculum is faith-infused and focuses on the mission of our Catholic Schools:

7.1 The curriculum adheres to appropriate, delineated standards, and is vertically aligned to ensure that every student successfully completes a rigorous and coherent sequence of academic courses based on the standards and rooted in Catholic values.

7.2 Standards are adopted across the curriculum, and include integration of the religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical dimensions of learning in all subjects.

7.3 Curriculum and instruction for 21st century learning provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to become creative, reflective, literate, critical, and moral evaluators, problem solvers, decision makers, and socially responsible global citizens.

7.4 Curriculum and instruction for 21st century learning prepares students to become expert users of technology, able to create, publish, and critique digital products that reflect their understanding of the content and their technological skills.

Diocese of Charleston Academic Standards and Curriculum

Religion
Our youngest learners are introduced to the beauty of our Catholic faith through prayer, story, and joyful discovery. Using His Little Way (Sophia Institute Press), Hallow, and Formed, children learn that God made them, loves them, and calls them His own. Through Bible stories, songs, crafts, prayers, and lessons on virtues such as kindness, honesty, patience, and respect, they begin to know Jesus as their friend, celebrate the liturgical seasons, and experience the joy of being part of God’s family. PreK4 students attend Mass weekly with their 5th/6th grade buddies, while PreK3 students are gradually introduced to attending Mass midyear.

Phonemic Awareness
Early literacy begins with strong listening and sound skills. Using the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program, our students build the foundation for reading success through daily lessons in rhyming, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds. These fun and interactive activities help children hear and play with language, preparing them to become confident readers and writers.

The Creative Curriculum
Our PreK3–PreK4 classrooms use The Creative Curriculum, a research-based approach to early childhood learning and development. Children explore, discover, and grow through hands-on experiences that nurture development across every domain: math, literacy, cognitive skills, physical development, English language acquisition, the arts, social studies, social-emotional skills, language, science, and technology. The PreK4 curriculum builds on the foundation established in PreK3, with both levels carefully tailored to meet children where they are and support growth that is developmentally appropriate for their age. Through teacher-guided play, exploration, and creativity, students build the skills and confidence they need for a lifelong love of learning.

Scholastic My Big World
Our PreK3–PreK4 students enjoy Scholastic My Big World, a colorful nonfiction magazine designed just for early learners. Each issue introduces children to engaging topics in science, social studies, and social development while building early nonfiction reading skills. With songs, videos, and hands-on activities, students explore the world around them, connect new ideas to their everyday experiences, and grow in curiosity and understanding.

STEM with LEGO® Education
Our PreK3–PreK4 students are introduced to the world of STEM through hands-on exploration with LEGO® Education. Using age-appropriate bricks and guided activities, children build, experiment, and problem-solve while developing creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. In PreK4, students take their engineering a step further by learning introductory coding on iPads to bring their LEGO creations to life. These playful experiences lay the foundation for future learning in science, technology, engineering, and math—helping students see themselves as young inventors and explorers.

Enrichment Classes
Our PreK3–PreK4 students enjoy a rich variety of enrichment classes that complement their core curriculum and foster creativity, expression, and wellness. Children explore Spanish to build early language skills, develop artistic talents in Art, experience rhythm and performance in Music, nurture a love of reading in Library, and strengthen their coordination and teamwork skills in Physical Education. These classes provide joyful, hands-on experiences that support comprehensive child development—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Assessments
We use a variety of assessments to support and track each child’s growth in PreK3–PreK4. Heggerty is used in PreK4 to monitor phonemic awareness skills, while The Creative Curriculum GOLD assesses development across multiple domains, including literacy, math, social-emotional skills, and cognitive growth for students in both PreK3 and PreK4. Teachers in both grades may also use BRIGANCE assessments as an optional tool to gain additional insight into their child’s learning progress. These assessments help teachers tailor instruction to each child’s needs and celebrate their achievements.
